Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's

Q: Why Mozambique?
A: I always knew I wanted to teach abroad and though I had never been, Central America and Africa were my top choices for "areas in the world I'd love to teach in." So when I got the e-mail asking if I'd be interested in helping a school in Africa that desperately needed teachers, I was immediately interested. Plus, the name sounded so cool.

Q: When will you leave?
A: I'll be doing a 10 day training with OC International from July 1-10 and then leaving for Mozambique right after that assuming I have enough support raised.

Q: What will you teach?
A: When I asked this question to Barbosa, the field director for OC who works in Mozambique, he replied, "Katie, it's Africa...be ready to teach anything." This got me quite paranoid that I would be teaching Algebra and my old nightmares about math would return. When I talked to the director of CAM though, she said I would teach Social Sciences classes and an English class which I had previously offered to teach.

Q: How long will you be gone?
A: The school year ends in the middle of June.

Q: What shots do you have to get?
A: Yellow fever and hepititis. Can't wait for these!

Q: Where will you live?
A: Madelena is a single, missionary woman from Brazil who currently lives in a house by herself so I will have a room in her house.

Q: Are you nuts?
A: Yes.

I am going to comment on this thing all the time!! Especially if you don't have my space. Also, I'd like to say that I always wanted that piece of cake in Pollyanna. This is why we are practically sisters. Don't go!! DON't LEAVE ME! Ok, just kidding...Jesus told you to and I'm 100% behind it. And yes, I will pray for you and for your mother.

I'm glad that you answered the "Are you nuts" question with a "Yes"...But it's a special kind of "nuts" that very few people have been blessed with! :) Either way, I think the children of Mozambique (sp?) will forever be changed (for the better) by having you in their lives. Casey and I will pray for your safety, security (financial and otherwise), and SANITY while you're away, and can't wait to hear some awesome stories when you return! :)
